Drum Scanning

With 3 commercial drum scanners available, we are able to handle all of your high end scanning projects. We can scan transparency film, negative film and unmounted prints up to 16"x16". For oversize prints and negatives, please call our studio for other scanning/digitizing options.

We carefully fluid mount all film for optimum quality and protection when scanning. Prints are wrapped around the drum under optically clear film which ensures the print is completely flat to the drum for ultimate sharpness.

Heidelberg Tango Drum Scanner

Our Heidelberg Tango features an oversized drum where we can mount originals up to 16"x16". With it's unique interface and excellent sharpness, we're able to do multiple scans of an original for stitching to produce extra large scans when needed. This scanner features a true optical resolution of 11,000 dpi with a dynamic range of 4.2 to ensure that all the information contained on your film or print is captured in the resulting scan.

Screen 1045ai Drum Scanner

Our Screen 1045ai drum scanners have an 8000 dpi optical scanning resolution and the ability to scan originals of up to 11" x 17". Again, we fluid mount all film for optimum quality and protection when scanning. The Screen 1045ai also allows us to manually focus on the grain of the film or paper, resulting in extremely sharp scans with an unsurpassed dynamic color/tonal range.

Scan Types: Economy Vs Portfolio vs Press Ready

We offer three types of drum scans to fit different project requirements.

Standard Drum Scans

Our Standard Drum Scans are available to those Clients who would like to save money on their scans and complete the post production themselves. These scans are great for images that might be used in a composite or will have a significant amount of editing or retouching done after the scan is produced..

We'll provide a well balanced scan that contains all of the RAW information contained in the film, with great shadow detail and highlight information. Economy Drum Scans will be cropped, rotated and saved only. Color corrections, dust removal and post production are not included with these scans.

Portfolio Drum Scans

We also provide high quality drum scans optimized for the RGB color space. Portfolio Scans are recommended not only for fine art printing, portfolio output and photographic film output, but also for images that might be used in a composite or enhanced before going to press or being printed.

Portfolio scans are individually adjusted for color balance according to our calibrated monitors, adjusted for maximum density as well as cleaned and spotted while at 100% enlargement. If we are creating the final archival pigment prints, we can optimize the file and provide swatch proofs or full proofs on your selected paper stock.

Press Ready

These RGB/CMYK scans are the highest quality drum scans available at Hanson Digital. Press Scans are recommended for jobs that require the utmost in quality, whether it's for CMYK accuracy* on a commercial printing press or RGB for archival pigment printing.

Press Scans are optimized for your printing space and are individually adjusted for optimum highlight & shadow density, color balanced, with ink densities adjusted for the type of paper stock your job will be printed on.

With this service, scans are thoroughly cleaned and spotted while at 200% enlargement to ensure quality in the finished piece. The final image(s) can also be separated to your printer's specifications. We can provide either fine art archival printing proofs, or g7 Contract Proofs depending on your application.

Color Matching

Both Portfolio & Press Drum Scans from positive film or prints are matched to the original source. If you would like to remove or adjust a cast in the original, please let us know when submitting your project. Scans from negatives will require a color guide. We can use an original print, digital file or a contact sheet to use as a guide for color correcting your scans. Images that require extensive computer time to match a provided sample (for example, matching scans from original negatives to prints that have been heavily dodged and burned) may incur extra charges.

If there are special considerations we should keep in mind when scanning your project, please let us know this when the job is submitted so we can go over the possibilities. Because scanning and color work is often subjective in nature, the more information you can provide us with when you submit your job, the more the results will be tailored specifically to you.

Turnaround

Normal turnaround for Portfolio & Press Drum Scans is 48-72hrs. Normal turnaround for Economy Drum Scans is 1-2 weeks. Please Note: While we always try to return your job ASAP, actual turnaround time depends upon quantity, size of scans, and current work in house. Please call for scheduling if your job or project requires a quicker turnaround. Rush services are available.
