Carbon Black & White Fine Art Digital Printing

For black & white photographic images and artwork, our unique Carbon Prints are unbeatable, both in beauty and longevity. We utilize a dedicated process known as Piezography printing with an Epson 9900. This is a highly unique and superior process for black & white printing that uses a carbon-based black ink with ten different shades of gray, split between 2 sets of inks - 1 full Carbon Set (beautiful Warm-tone) as well as 1 full Selenium Set (cooler tones) - beautifully recreating the look of traditional printing on Cotton Rag papers.

Specialized software takes full advantage of the carbon-based inks, creating prints with superlative highlight and shadow detail with an expanded tonal range and complexity when compared to other printing methods. Absolutely no color ink is used to create these prints and we have never seen this kind of detail imaged in a print previously. We can image a 1% dot in the highlights as well as pull distinction between a 95% and 99% black tone. 

Compared to black & white prints made with the limited gray palette of a color digital printer and/or color inks, the carbon-based ink technique eliminates inconsistent color casts under different lighting situations and offers a smooth, very finely detailed pure monochrome image.

Also unique about our system, is we are able to split-tone between the two custom ink sets, in infinite variations, to create completely one of a kind prints. We can control both ink sets separately in the highlights, mid-tones and shadows in any percentage or ratio.

Carbon Black & White printing is an extremely archival process. The carbon-based inks are fade-resistant to a rate of less than 5% over 100 years, a remarkable archival standard for digital prints. Fine art prints imaged with color inks can have a fade rate of up to 33% over the same amount of time.

Refillable ink cartridges also make this printing process Eco-friendly, with far less waste than disposable ink cartridges.

With a range of Cotton Rag papers to choose from up to 44" wide by nearly any length, this process offers the highest standard in black & white digital printing. This process is perfect for photographers or artists who are selling directly to collectors of black & white photography.

Canvas Printing, Stretching, and Surface Coating

Giclée printing on canvas is the perfect solution for fine art reproductions of original painted art, and an impressive treatment for any images intended for direct wall display. We do it all under one roof, utilizing top-quality canvas and post-treatment materials, as well as providing in-house Giclée canvas stretching services at affordable prices.

Canvas prints can be made up to 60" wide by virtually any length and stretched onto either standard or heavy-duty bars with a Gallery Wrap. A variety of top coat varnish options are available to provide a durable, professional and realistic finish.

Canvas Coating

We strongly recommend a protective top coat varnish for all canvas prints. This not only adds UV/environmental protection but also ensures the longevity of your prints. This extra layer of protection not only increases the durability of canvas surface, making it more resistant to minor scuffs and abrasions but also increases density/saturation, giving the final piece a finished, polished look.

Brush Strokes

Applying brush strokes after the print is made is an excellent way to make the reproduction look even more like an original. This hands on, textured clear-coating process, is actually applied by hand with different size/shaped brushes to mimic the look of the original strokes.

Depending on the level of authenticity you would like to show, we offer several different service levels for adding brush strokes. We can also provide a strip test to show different texture options. Since this is a completely custom process, we can provide an estimate upon reviewing the original.

Canvas Stretching

We stretch your final canvas prints in-house, using high-quality, precision-cut stretcher bars in either standard sizes (.75" thick) or heavy duty sizes (1.5" thick).

Standard stretcher bars are usually meant to go directly into a frame. Their .75" profile allows for a sleeker, lighter duty fit in the final framing mount. Because these are lighter duty, we usually don't recommend using Standard bars on sizes that are above 30"x40".

Heavy duty stretcher bars are most commonly associated with the term "Gallery Wrap". The Gallery Wrap is where your image extends beyond the face and wraps around the edges of the stretchers. Prints stretched on heavy duty bars are usually meant to hang directly on the wall without a frame (although these still may be framed if desired).

We can also include and/or install all of the mounting hardware and wire, so your piece is ready to hang when you pick it up or receive it.

Custom Sizes & Options

Stretcher bars, both standard and heavy duty, are only available in whole number increments. If a half number is needed, or a size larger than what is listed, we can have custom bars made specific for your project.

Our services can be completely tailored to you your specific desires. Meaning if you simply just want the print, or a print & varnish, but not stretching, please inquire for a custom estimate.

File Setup

Sizes indicate the front-facing surface area as outlined by the stretcher bars and not the full sheet size for the print. The actual image/print size will need to be larger than the front-facing surface, to allow for enough extra fabric to wrap around the bars.

For Standard Bars, there must be a minimum of 1.5" of extra material or image extending beyond each side of the stretched area (adding 3" to both the height and width). For a Gallery Wrap finish on Heavy Duty Bars, 2.5" of extra image extending beyond each side of the stretched area (adding 5" to both the height and width).

Prints without enough additional image area for the Gallery Wrap can be extended. Please ask about options when submitting your files for printing.
